You’ve been told you need to apostille your car title. Three questions may instantly arise:
- What is an apostille?
- Why do I need to apostille my car title?
- Who can help me apostille my car title?
Let’s answer these questions for you.
What is an Apostille?
An apostille is a specialized certificate that is issued by the Secretary of State in Washington, DC or by the state that issued the document. This certificate is attached to your original document and verifies that the document is authentic. There are currently 117 countries that recognize the apostille as a way to legitimize paperwork.
But don’t worry, if your car title needs to be authenticated by a country that does not recognize the apostille, we can work with them to legalize the title.
Why Do I Need to Apostille my Car Title?
Most anytime you are working with a country outside of the United States, you will need the required documentation apostilled or legalized. But there are several reasons why you may need to apostille your car title:
- Your car was stolen and recovered in another country
- You are selling your vehicle to someone outside of the U.S.
- You are planning to ship your car to another country
- You are a foreign buyer wishing to purchase a car within the U.S.
Before we can begin the apostille process, there is one step you must complete; the car title must be signed and notarized. Verify the process with your notary, but most likely you will simply be able to sign the original title in front of the notary. If you are outside of the United States, contact the U.S. Embassy for an American notary.
